Beta-Carotene

This fat soluble carotenoid has anti-oxidant activity and is readily converted to Vitamin A in the body (it is a vitamin A pre-cursor). It’s non-toxic and is only converted to Vitamin A in the body as needed. It also may have higher antioxidant activity than pure Vitamin A. Provitamin A refers to beta-carotene which can be converted to retinol in the body. Several studies have shown the benefits of combining vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta carotene in decreasing oxidative stress secondary to exercise in advanced athletes. Good dosages range from 15-30 mg daily in divided doses (3 mg beta carotene supplies around 5000 IU of vitamin A).
